Internship & Trainee Programs for Participants

Before You Leave

Pre-Departure Orientation

It is required that all trainee/internship program participants attend a Pre-Departure Orientation meeting in their home country before departing to the United States.

Insurance

CETUSA provides you with International Medical and Accident Insurance for the period stated on your Form DS-2019. You are responsible for arranging your own insurance coverage for any additional period of time for which you remain on U.S. territory during the grace period. (You can download the insurance form from Downloads section.)

Documents you will need during your travel:

* Valid Passport with J-1 visa * Form DS-2019 * Training Plan * Participant Handbook * Medical Insurance Policy Card * Your U.S. residence address

Advice: Make two copies of your passport, Form DS-2019 and J-1 visa. Take one with you and leave one at home.

Housing

CETUSA regional managers will assist you with locating suitable accommodations prior to your arrival.

Money

Scheduling your travel to the U.S.

CETUSA recommends that you arrive in the U.S. at least 2-3 days before the start of your J-1 Visa Trainee/Internship Program to settle into your new environment.

You are required to bring with you to the U.S. at least the amount of funds listed on your Form DS-2019. This amount would be $1,200 or higher. You should plan on a minimum budget of at least $1,000 per month to cover rent, food, personal expenses, etc. Please contact CETUSA for more accurate information on your designation area specifics.

Packing Advice

We suggest you research the area you are traveling to and find out about the weather conditions in the given season. You can also ask for advice from your future supervisor or CETUSA regional manager about appropriate attire to wear in your training place. If a uniform or formal attire is required at your host company’s site, it is good to know in advance so that you can bring some of your favorite suits with you to wear.

Remember: You need to have all travel documents on you. Also: we recommend that you keep your valuables such as money, laptop and camera in your carry-on luggage.
