The capital city is Quito with approximately 1.5 million people.

High School System:

The secondary school system in Ecuador is made up of two 3 year cycles beginning with grade 7. Students must pass the first cycle to be admitted to the second cycle. Students wishing to attend university must pass the second cycle also.

Most exchange students will be placed in private schools and will be required to wear uniforms. The typical Ecuadorian school year runs from September to July. Classes are usually held from 7:00AM to 2:00PM from Monday to Friday. Students remain in one classroom and teachers rotate rooms. Students have the same schedules every week and always share the same classroom with the same classmates.
