  • … how successful they were in achieving their personal goals and objectives

“I was working on a project, which was part of a partnership that is very important to the company. We had started working on what seemed like a small side-application in the overall big project domain. After getting more feature requests by the partner we realized, that our initial software design for the product was not scalable to the customers expectation. We decided to sit down and re engineer the application. Step by step we got familiar with the tools required to achieve the new design. I learned that overcoming difficult situations is not a one-step process, but oftentimes countless iterations and extensions are required leading to the best solution.Sebastian, 24, Germany, Computer Science and Media Program, Santa Barbara, California

  • … how successful they were in achieving their personal goals and objectives

“My main goal was to not be treated like a stranger, but an equal (even if only temporary) part of society. To my mind, a huge part of achieving that goal is mastering the language. As far as vocabulary and grammar goes, I would say that I was already very comfortable and successful in using the English language when I came here. My accent game me away though. Spending time with native speakers in professional and private life helped me adapt to the pronunciation of everyone around me. If I meet new people now, who do not know about my country of origin, they are oftentimes surprised I am not a long term resident. It has become second nature to use the English language and I am really going to miss the interaction with native speakers on a daily basis.”Sebastian, 24, Germany, Computer Science and Media Program, Santa Barbara, California

  • … experiences that influenced their perception of American culture

“I experienced the energy of people in Silicon Valley who have made the US a center of innovation and excellence all over the world. I participated in cultural activities (such as Thanksgiving, Halloween and Christmas) for the first time and tried to understand the cultural and historical significance behind each of them.
